Sage, Crawley- Café Review

I'm happy to say that my nearest town, Crawley in the South East of England is slowly becoming a more vegan friendly town! First the vegan chain, Loving Hut opened a cafe there in 2016 and as of May this year, we've been treated to another 100% plant-based enterprise - the family-owned, Sage Cafe.

Sage opened its doors to a huge response and rightly so as I was so impressed with what they had to offer! The decor is modern but cosy and the staff are super friendly, passionate and helpful. They always go out of their way to make your visit special, no matter what time of day.

As far as the menu goes, they offer a lovely mixture of healthy and indulgent dishes, as described in more detail below. They are currently open every day except Mondays and on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, they are open late until 9:30pm.

I have now been there A LOT! I’m trying to make my way through the menu but I have already got a few favourites which I just can’t stay away from…And I always start with their chilled vanilla oat milkshake because it’s too yummy!

They have an extensive selection! For starters, they have breakfast options like a Full English (or Full Vegland as they call it!), a breakfast wrap with scrambled tofu & peppers and a nutritional bowl with fruit, yoghurt & granola…I am yet to get up early enough to try one of these, but I will make it happen one day!

And their mains include delicious classics from jacket potatoes, vegetable stir-fry and lasagne to speciality Mediterranean inspired dishes like aubergine & peanut butter curry, portobello mushroom & grilled halloumi burger (the absolute BEST!) and a spicy, grilled tofu salad. There’s also a delicious range of sandwich fillings, which you can also have in a baguette or wrap if you prefer. The Sage special mix with vegan feta and baby leaves is very good!

A daily soup is also offered alongside changing specials like stuffed aubergine, mushroom arancini and homemade kofte kebab on flatbread with a raita dip, which I have had several times and is fantastic!

There are also a few kids’ options including “chicken” nuggets, chips & beans and a chickpea burger, and they have a lovely, wide variety of beverages! Coffees, teas, superfood smoothies, juices, shakes - You name it, they have it.

Dessert-wise there's always a lovely array of cakes, brownies, bars, flapjacks and more displayed on the counter to choose from...If you've somehow left room! And there are also always gluten-free options across the whole menu including the sweet treats.

Recent additions to the café are a lovely salad and meze bar to eat in or take away and a whole fridge with sandwiches, baguettes, salads, chilled drinks AND cake options to go!! Perfect for busy lunch times.

I am so happy that Sage arrived and that they are really thriving and creating a buzz around local vegan food. As much as I love seeing the big high street chain café’s and restaurants offering more vegan options now, I think it’s so important that we all support local vegan businesses. They offer so many tasty and creative dishes, and they’re not overpriced.

Even famous faces are getting in on the Sage action! Well-known Australian vegan activist, Joey Carbstrong popped in with his girlfriend in July and let his 68.4 K followers know about it on his Instagram story. The staff were very excited that he paid a visit, and more importantly, that he loved the food!

I think that they have a very exciting future ahead and I look forward to seeing what else they have up their sleeves. Now, I need to set my alarm so I can get up and go and try the Full Vegland breakfast!

Thanks for reading!
